Ever start out on a new adventure only to find yourself giving up just a few weeks or even days later?  Don’t worry you are not alone! Unfortunately, it happens to a lot of people. While there are many reasons why people do not stick to their goals, one of the most common reasons is not having the right mindset. If you want to be successful in your intentions and in reaching your goals, you must put in the “mental prep” to create a mindset makeover mentality.

What is a “Mindset Makeover”?

A “mindset makeover” is changing your thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs around the goals you have planned for yourself. It is a way to consciously rethink your thoughts to work for you and not against you. Take a second to think of a recent goal that you wanted to accomplish but you did not stick to. Why do you think this happened? Now think about your mentality. What attitudes, feelings, and beliefs did you have surrounding the goal from the beginning? Did you truly believe you could accomplish the goal? If not, why? Could it be that your mindset sabotaged your efforts from the beginning due to negative thinking?

Why is the Right Mindset Important?

T. Harv Eker,  well known motivational speaker and author of Millionaire Mind, said that “thoughts lead to feelings, feelings lead to actions, actions lead to results”. If you think about the thoughts that you have surrounding your goal, whether it is to lose weight or to write a book, how you think and what you believe about this goal leads to a feeling, which ultimately leads to the actions you take.

For example, let’s say that you have a new opportunity that is available to you. Initially you may think to yourself, “ I don't know if I can do this, maybe I should give up” (thought) which makes you feel nervous and uncomfortable (feeling).  You now have the choice to act upon how you are feeling. Your choices are choice A, to give up or choice B, to shift your mindset and give it a try. This is the part where your mindset makeover mentality must kick in.  Acknowledge the thoughts and feelings and then choose to give the opportunity a try. If you want different results in your life, you must be willing to get outside of your comfort zone and try new things.

Whether You Think You Can or Can’t You’re Right, at Least That’s What They’ve Told Us

“Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right” is a quote from Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motors. Many people have always agreed with this statement. While that may have some validity to it, it doesn’t matter if you give it your best shot. Remember the goal is to overcome your limited thinking and shift your mind into a mindset makeover that will help you reach your goals.

The next time you create a goal, take the time to assess how you’re thinking and feeling about this goal. Then take a few minutes to address any negative emotions and replace those emotions with positive feedback. Such as “I know it makes me nervous, but I am going to give it my best shot; I can do this.” You are the co-creator of this life and you get the choice to decide what goals are worth pursuing. If you really want to reach your goals, try the mindset makeover shift; acknowledge your thoughts, feelings, and actions and then decide to give the opportunity a shot. Constantly replace your negative self talk with positive and nourishing statements. For more mindset resources check out the Mindset Kit
